Fight for the masses

Bluray discMany months have come by, and a true winner has arise from the ashes of the battle of the formats. No, I’m not talking about Vhs and Betamax. I’m specifically speaking about the famous Samsung HD-DVD and Sony Blu-ray conflict above the oceans of the High definition tempest. It’s valid to say that it was necessary to define a winner. Sony knows this very well from its past, how ugly can it be to be left out of the mainstream market. Nevertheless there’s a new trend on the rise and one that it was not completely foreseen by neither both technology titans. Current DVD sells are showing a steady and irrefutable down trend, and if we analyze the variety and diversity of portable media formats and devices, we can conclude on a sad but certain thing: You are willing to see your favorite show or movie on the go, and not necessarily with the highest audio and video quality. Is very interesting to see the opposite direction of the market. 30 and 20 years ago, all the advertising campaigns of the world made a clear statement about their latest and finest technology. This is just not the case anymore. Most of the manufacturing of electronics is made on the same region and quality control has been thrown out of the window in many cases. So where this scenario leaves us ?
It’s going to be a hard battle for Sony and for bluray in general. With cellphones, pmp players, ipods and a gazillion other gadgets the content is everywhere and instantly on your fingertips. There’s no need to go to the store to purchase a movie, and it’s even less likely that you would go to blockbuster for rental – even the movie selection at the store is extremely poor – Netflix watch on demand model seems like a response to this new trend, although it’s far from the outstanding quality of video and sound both titans were fighting for.
